Re:  Visits to Universities

I am excited about the possibility of visiting universities in other parts of the world to learn first-hand how graduate students are trained to be school administrators. I have a pervasive feeling that through the exchange of ideas and pedagogies that both my university, Eastern New Mexico, and whatever institutions and individuals I am able to converse with will gain in an understanding of not only knowledge, but personal relationships that will continue through time that will strengthen all involved.

Currently, Eastern New Mexico University has an agreement with People’s Republic of China in which a number of Chinese students receive two years of their college training at ENMU, and then return to China for the last year of the college experience.  This program has been in place for the past three years that I am aware of, and has been most successful.

On several occasions I have had a Chinese student from this program in my classroom as a facilitator for interactive television education administration classes.  Several of the Chinese students are trained while at ENMU in this area of technology expertise.  I have always found them to be extremely accomplished in technology and quite personable.  My discussion with the Chinese students always fascinates me, as it is invaluable understanding their cultural background and their experiences in the Chinese education system.  It is my belief that if common individuals of different cultures can meet on a personal level with some common agenda that is not political, then tremendous strides can be achieved in not only intellectual knowledge, but personal empathy as well.

Although there are twenty Chinese students at Eastern New Mexico University it is not a true student exchange because we have no students studying in the People’s Republic.  I find this sad, but somewhat understandable, in that it would take not only a human commitment, but also call for a complete change of mindset for a student from the United States.  From our conversations with the Chinese students, they are exposed to and learn English at an early point in their schooling.  In the United States, public schools most typically do not begin any concerted effort in foreign languages until high school and most foreign language teachers would argue that this is a disadvantageous start date to learn a foreign language..

I am particularly interested in how other nations prepare their school administrators; what types of classes are part of the curriculum; and what other preparation takes place prior to an individual becoming a school principal.

I am prepared to work with the administration of Eastern New Mexico University in attempting to devise any student exchange program that would be agreeable to the Board of Regents.  Knowing that they already have a connection in place with the People’s Republic of China gives me some confidence that the administration might be receptive to another “exchange” program.

The FED sounds like a wonderful opportunity in which I would have the opportunity to establish contacts in other parts of the world and to become a part of a learning community that could extend beyond the summer of 2010.
